It is a procedure to remove a portion of the disc(cartilage between two vertebrae) from the spinal column between each vertebra. The ruptured intervertebral disc is that the part which gets affected the foremost and becomes the common reason for spine surgery. In this type of spine surgery, the herniated disc is removed and lessen the pressure on our nerves.

  • Foraminotomy:

It is a procedure used to relieve pressure on our nerve, but in this case, the nerve is being pinched by more than a herniated disc. A foraminotomy removes a portion of the bone and other tissues, which may be compressing the nerve as it exists in the spinal column.

  • Spine fusion:

It is most commonly performed to relieve the pain and pressure on the spinal cord that results in the disc (cartilage between two vertebrae) which causes degenerative disc disease. Other common conditions which are cured by spinal fusion are spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylosis, spinal fracture, scoliosis, and kyphosis. Like any other surgery, there may be complications and they may include infection, blood loss, and nerve damage. Spine fusion also changes the regular motion of the spine and helps in the functioning of the body. As it is a critical surgery so the spine surgery cost in India is less as compare to any other country.

  • Spinal disc replacement:

It is a new surgery that is still quite uncommon. Spine disc replacement is done to treat specific types of back pain, to avoid the problems associated with spine fusion surgery.

  • Anterior cervical corpectomy spine surgery:

It is done when the cervical disease encloses more than just the disc space. The spine surgeon may recommend for the removal of the vertebral body as well as the disc spaces, to completely decompress the cervical canal. This procedure is done for multi-level cervical stenosis with spinal cord compression caused by the bone spur (osteophytes) growth.

  • Cervical spine surgery:

It is performed for different cervical spine problems. Generally, surgery is done for degenerative disorders, trauma or instability. These conditions can create pressure on the spinal cord or on the nerves. The motive of this surgery is to get relieve from pain, tingling and weakness, restore nerve function and prevent spinal abnormality.

  • Lumbar laminectomy:

It is a surgical procedure, which is done for leg pain related to herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and other related conditions. Lumbar laminectomy is generally done to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerve by widening the spinal canal. This process is done by removing or trimming the lamina (roof) of the vertebrae to create more space for the nerves.

  • Endoscopic spine surgery:

It is an operation on the lumbar spine done using a surgical endoscope and microsurgical techniques. This type of surgery is performed by orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons who are experts in this field.

  • Vertebroplasty:

It is a process in which a synthetic cement material is injected inside the broken spine bone, giving excellent results in pain relief with very low side effects. This procedure can be safely done in osteoporotic fractures, painful spine bones after the spread of cancer, non-cancerous painful tumors of spine bones or to augment strength of weak spine bone, to increase the holding power of the weak bones for any other surgical procedures.

Dr. Babita Goel replied

20th January, 2020 at 12:58 pm

Dear Satendra, Transverse myelitis is an inflammation on both sides of one section of the spinal cord (in your case it is uncontrolled urine). This neurological disorder damages the insulating material of the nerve fibres which results in interruption of the nerve conduction system. Usually, recovery begins from 2 to 12 weeks of the first onset of symptoms and may continue up to two years. In case if there is no improvement in symptoms within several months then the recovery is difficult. About one-third of these patients show partial or full recovery. However, take one more neurologist opinion. Don't lose hope, regular treatment will be of help. Hope our answer helps you.

Hello Faisal, Treatment depends on several factors including the severity of the injury, the type of injury, the length of time since the injury and other existing conditions. And since you have mentioned it’s been 10 years, so the reason is nerve tissue grows slowly, so it can take several years to know the full benefit of surgery.  But further there are various surgeries we have mentioned below: •Nerve graft: In this procedure, the damaged part of the brachial plexus is removed and replaced with sections of nerves harvested from other parts of your body. This helps restore your arm's function. •Nerve transfer: When the nerve root has been torn from the spinal cord, surgeons often take a less important nerve that's still working and connect it to a nerve that's more important but not working. •Muscle transfer: Muscle transfer is a procedure in which your surgeon removes a less important muscle or tendon from another part of your body, typically the thigh, transfers it to your arm, and reconnects the nerves and blood vessels supplying the muscle. We have also listed down few best Orthopedic Surgeons to whom you can consult: Dr. Ashok Rajgopal FRCS, MS - Orthopedics, MBBS, Orthopedist 45 Years’ Experience Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon Dr. IPS Oberoi MBBS, MS - Orthopedics, MCh - Orthopedics 27 Years’ Experience Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon Dr. Pradeep Sharma MBBS, MS, MCh- Orthopedics 40 Years’ Experience Indian Spinal Injuries Center, New Delhi Dr. Vikram Shah MBBS, MS – Orthopedics, Joint Replacement Surgeon 39 Years’ Experience Shalby Hospitals, Ahmedabad Hope this answer helps you.

Hello, Lumbar Radicular pain radiates into the lower extremity (thigh, calf, and occasionally the foot) directly along the course of a specific spinal nerve root. The most common symptom of radicular pain is sciatica (pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve - down the back of the thigh and calf into the foot). Treatment In the initial stage, the doctor suggests a nonsurgical treatment (such as physical therapy, medications) which often gets improve within 6 weeks to 3 months. Since in your case the nonsurgical treatment does not alleviate the pain, decompressive surgery, such as laminectomy and/or discectomy/microdiscectomy, may be recommended. This type of surgery typically provides relief of radicular pain for 85% to 90% of patients. We suggest you to consult a nearby Orthopedician and only after a physical examination, complete treatment can be provided by the doctors. I hope this answers your query.
