The health and well-being of the patient must be the first thing that influences the decision to choose radiation therapy and not the cost. Therefore, in most cases, taking radiation therapy or any cancer treatment in India is necessary, not an option.

Usually, the radiotherapy cost per session in India ranges between Rs. 60,000 ($772) to Rs, 2,25,000 ($2895) depending on the area, cancer stage, and hospitals. However, some advanced precise techniques like IGRT and IMRT radiotherapy cost in India is slightly higher than the usual radiation therapy cost per session. So the overall cost of radiation therapy in India can reach up to ₹ 20,00,000 ($28,981), depending on which type of radiation technique you have been recommended.

Let's take a look at the cost of radiation therapy in major Indian cities.

However, the cost of radiotherapy varies from one city to another in India. Given below is a city wise classification of the cost of radiation therapy in India.

Basically, there are two major types of radiation therapy. You will notice there is a huge variation between the costs of these types. To clear your doubts, we have explained various reasons for this below :

1. Internal Radiation Therapy (IRT) :

IRT is also known as Brachytherapy. Usually, the type of cancer and the techniques used will determine the cost of Brachytherapy.

It is most suitable for the treatment of Eye Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer, Skin Cancer, Breast Cancer, Gallbladder Carcinoma, Uterine Carcinoma, Vaginal Cancer, Lung rectum, and Prostate Cancer.

(IRT, i.e., Brachytherapy)
₹ 61,960 to ₹ 5,16,337 ($ 897 to $ 7,481)
The cost of IRT differs depending on the type of cancer being treated. For example, the costs of prostate Cancer, Head & Neck Cancer, Skin Cancer are the highest compared to treatments for Eye Cancer, rectum cancer, etc., for the same technique. Breast cancer radiotherapy cost in India approximately ranges from 5 lakhs to 6 lakhs, including radiotherapy and surgery cost.

2. External Beam Radiation Therapy :

There are many forms of techniques and procedures for external beam radiation therapy, and the cost of each varies from one another. Following is the range of costs for different procedures and techniques of radiotherapy.

IMRT is mostly used for tumors of the Head and Neck, Brain, Lungs, Lymphomas, and Gynecological Cancers.
4. Proton therapy₹ 10,00,000 to ₹ 20,00,000
($14,490 to $28,819)
Apollo hospital in Chennai is currently the only hospital conducting proton beam therapy in India. Therefore, this form of radiation therapy cost in Apollo hospital is so high due to the building, maintenance, and handling of the machine.
5. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)₹ 2,50,000 to ₹ 3,50,000
($ 3,622 to $ 5,071)
VMAT is the latest and advanced technique of radiation therapy.
6. 2d conventional technique (2D CT)₹ 30,000 to ₹ 60,000
($434 to $869)
2D CT is the most basic external radiation therapy. Mostly used in metastatic palliative treatment along with other treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy.
7. Gamma Knife₹ 4,45,216 to ₹ 4,86,955
($6400 to $7000)
Gamma Knife is used to inactivate benign brain tumors and malignant tumors.

There is another type of radiation therapy called stereotactic radiosurgery. This type of radiation therapy is mainly used on brain tumors. The cost of radiation therapy for brain tumour in India ranges between $12,000 and $55,000. However, with some additional treatments, total expenses can easily exceed $100,000.

*To be on the safer side, be prepared for 5% to 10% variation on the estimated cost depending on your condition. This cost estimates the procedure only and does not include external expenses such as hospital room rent, nursing charges, food, etc.

You must be wondering why the cost of radiation therapy in India differs in different types of techniques?  Well, let's find out.

Factors impacting the cost of radiation therapy in India

  • The treatment package: The cost of radiation is determined as per the doses and the length of treatment required for a patient. This consequently depends on the type of cancer, stage, the radiation technique required, etc. Generally, the hospital has a package that determines the overall cost of cancer treatment in India.
  • The type of cancer: The cost of radiation therapy varies drastically depending on the type of cancer being treated—a set of international standards that entail what types of cancer would require which type of radiation therapy. So, the cost would depend on which type is the best for you as per your radiation oncologist.
  • Cost of the machine: Different machines are used for different radiation therapy techniques. When it comes to external beam radiation therapy, the building, installation of machines, and setup have huge costs. This cost will also affect the overall cost of If not done recently, a primary biopsy will cost around ₹30,000($432) to ₹35,000($504)radiation therapy as well.
  • Place of treatment (City and hospitals): The facilities for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc., are only available in specialized centers in select locations. Since most of these centers are very well-known multi-specialty and private hospitals located in metropolitan cities such as hospitals in Mumbai, Delhi, Banglore, Kolkata, etc., the overall cost of cancer treatment is higher due to various external services in these hospitals, which are considered excellent.
  • Stage of cancer: The cancer stage also affects the overall cost of radiation as the required doses and types of radiation vary for every type of cancer.
  • Accommodation and other miscellaneous costs: Other miscellaneous costs such as accommodations in the hospital if required are not included in this cost. These factors will affect the overall cost.

Post/Pre-Radiation Therapy Costs

There will be many costs that can occur before and after the radiation therapy, depending on the recommendation of your medical oncologist in India. So to help you prepare for the same, we have listed all the probable costs in the following table :

Pre/Post-Radiation therapy tests and treatmentsCost Estimation
1. Consultation with the doctorConsultation with the doctor might cost around ₹600 ($8) - ₹5000 ($70) before you can go ahead with the treatment.
2. General biopsyPrimary biopsy, if not done recently, will cost around ₹30,000($432) to ₹35,000($504) to do.
3. PET scanA PET scan will cost around ₹16,000($230.70) to ₹35,000($504).
4. CT scanIt can cost around ₹2,000($30) to ₹2,500($37), there might be additional costs of ₹1,000($15) to ₹2,000($30) for contrast material
5. MRI scanDepending on which body part is being tested it can range from ₹1,500($22) to ₹25,000($ 360).
6. EndoscopyIf required, depending on the types of endoscopy it can cost approximately ₹800($12) to ₹10,500($152).

Let's take a look at the other cancer treatment options beyond radiation therapy.

Additional treatments

Sometimes there might be a requirement for multiple treatments because the tumor is too big to be removed easily or to ease the symptoms of cancer, so the cost for such treatments is:

Pre/Post-Radiation therapy tests and treatmentsCost Estimation
1. ChemotherapyCost of chemotherapy in India can vary from ₹56,000 ($800) to ₹2,80,000 ($4,000) per chemo cycle.

You may also have to pay for Induction chemotherapy which will cost you approximately ₹6,98,650 ($10,000) to ₹8,38,380 ($12,000).
2. SurgeryIf applicable, surgeries in India cost around ₹2,80,000 ($4,000) to ₹10,50,000 ($15,000).

Following is an estimated basic range of radiotherapy costs in India between a private hospital and government/charitable hospital in India :

  1. Private Hospitals:  Cancer Treatment at private hospitals in India is at par with any cancer hospital in the world. Usually, to receive treatment in hospitals in India, there is almost no queue or waiting list.
  2. Government/Charitable Hospitals: While the technology and treatment techniques are excellent with minimal cost, the waitlist is much longer than other hospitals. Mostly they do not provide medical tourism services.
    • General plan: Usually, you will be in a queue with another patient to receive subsidized treatment.
    • Private plan: Here, the patient will have to pay a little extra for a quick consultation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Cost comparison of radiation therapy with other developed countries :

One of the many reasons to choose India for radiation therapy is its cost-efficiency in major treatments such as this.

Below we have compared costs between India and developed countries for radiation therapy.

The reasons for variations in costs between India and other developed countries are:

  1. Currency: The value of Indian currency is lower than the USD, pounds, euro, etc. so, all the costs, including major treatments like radiation, chemotherapy, and other cancer treatments, are lower than in other developed countries.
  2. Standard of living: India's economic and social indicators are quite low compared to other developed countries such as the USA, UK, etc. So the prices of day-to-day facilities such as transport, accommodation, food, and medical treatment are cost-effective.
  3. Competition: Many research centers and cancer treatment Hospitals in India follow the international standards of treatment and quality. Since most of them have Radiation therapy-related technology and specialists with cost-effective treatment, you can have your pick of hospitals.
  4. Hospitals: Many private and government hospitals provide different types of radiation therapy techniques. The cost of radiation therapy in India at these hospitals is cost-effective.

For example, the cancer hospitals in Delhi use cutting-edge technology to provide the best medical and surgical treatments for various cancer patients, and they do not compromise quality. In fact, some of the hospitals in India are globally recognized and have international accreditation.
  5. Doctor: One of the major factors for the reasonable cost of radiation therapy in India is the low doctor charges compared to developed countries. The cost of consultation and further getting treatment from the doctors depend on the doctor’s qualifications, experience, and the hospital they practice.

Disclaimer: The cost mentioned here is for two travelers for around 25 days, including hospital and accommodation. This is an average cost being mentioned here, which is subjected to change.

1. How many radiation therapy sessions are required?
The majority of patients receive five treatments each week (1 treatment a day from Monday to Friday, with a break at the weekend). However, in some cases, treatment may be administered more than once a day or over the weekend.

2. After cancer treatment, how long does radiation reside in your body?

Radiation treatment does not immediately destroy cancer cells. Instead, it might take days or weeks for cancer cells to die after therapy. After then, cancer cells continue to die for weeks or months after radiation therapy has finished.

3. Is radiation more harmful than chemotherapy?

Radiation therapy has fewer adverse effects than chemotherapy since it focuses on a certain region of your body. It may, however, affect healthy cells in your body. In addition, radiation can cause digestive problems such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

4. When is radiation used in the treatment of cancer?

As the only main cancer therapy. Neoadjuvant treatment is used before surgery to reduce a malignant tumour. The adjuvant treatment kills cancer cells in conjunction with other therapies, such as chemotherapy, to halt the development of residual cancer cells after surgery.

5. When it comes to radiation therapy, what is the success rate?

Patients who are in the early stages of cancer may benefit from either brachytherapy or external beam radiation. With either technique, success rates of about 90% or greater can be attained.
