Stem cells can be obtained from two sources: the blood and bone marrow. A small needle is placed into your veins to collect blood, which filters the stem cells and then returns the blood to the body. To collect stem cells from bone marrow, a syringe is used to extract them from your pelvic bone. This procedure does not need any surgery; just skin punctures are used where the needle was inserted.
