Can I switch from metoprolol tartrate to succinate for high blood pressure?

Patient's Query

If my father was prescribed metoprolol tartrate 25mg, but ran out and has high blood pressure, would it be ok for him to take metoprolol succ. Er 50mg until he gets into his doctor?

Answered by Dr. Babita Goel

Metoprolol tartrate and metoprolol succinate ER are slightly different but still in the same family of medications. They both help lower blood pressure, but the succinate ER is extended-release, so it lasts longer in the body. If your dad takes the 50mg ER instead of the 25mg tartrate, it might be a bit stronger, so I'd suggest he starts with half a tablet to be safe. But it's always best for him to see his physician to get back on track properly.
