Omega-3 and Healthy Aging: Understanding Its Role in a Balanced Diet

By Dr. Smriti Vajpeyi| Last Updated at: 2nd Nov '26| 16 Min Read

Overview

Healthy eating habits play an important role in maintaining overall health and well-being throughout life. From childhood to older adulthood, nutritional needs change, making it essential to follow a balanced and varied diet. This article explores the importance of developing healthy eating habits across generations, including the role of essential nutrients in childhood growth, building balanced meals, reducing excessive consumption of highly processed foods, and encouraging family participation in healthy eating. It also highlights how nutrition needs evolve with age, the benefits of regular physical activity, and the importance of developing sustainable lifestyle habits rather than following restrictive diets or chasing quick results.

Omega-3 and Healthy Aging: Understanding Its Role in a Balanced Diet

Healthy aging for active senior citizens includes activities that enable them to move around frequently, to feel well and to engage in activities on a regular basis. As we grow older our bodies need more nutrients than before in order to function optimally. Of all nutrients, the omega-3 fatty acids are particularly important for senior citizens. These fatty acids facilitate the functions of cells and support the heart, brain and eyes.

There are three forms of omega-3s found in foods: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found in plant-based foods like walnuts, chia seeds, ground flaxseeds and many types of oil including canola and soybean oil. EPA and DHA are found in fatty fish and seafood including sardines, salmon and mackerel.

However, the omega-3s are not the only nutrients important for the health of seniors. Other important factors are physical activity, sleep, social contact, and a balanced and varied diet.

Also important is the role of the three important fatty acids (so called Omega-3-fatty-acids) in the diet of seniors: how ALA (the plant-based predecessor of the two seafood fatty acids EPA and DHA) as well as EPA and DHA support the normal function of the body of seniors and how they can prevent diseases of heart, brain and eyes of seniors.

How does Omega-3 support Health as we Age?

Increasing numbers of older people are interested in using essential fatty acids, in particular omega-3 fatty acids, as dietary supplements to maintain normal body function and to aid heart, brain and eye health.

The science linking omega-3 EPA and/or DHA found in fatty fish with levels of blood triglycerides and other markers of cardiovascular disease has been relatively well established. Important to note, however, is that the omega-3s offer some promise for heart health but no magic bullet in the form of a supplement for dealing with heart disease. It is most important to take omega-3s as part of an overall strategy of healthy eating in conjunction with other healthy strategies of lifestyle.

DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in fatty fish, is also important for the normal function of the brain. Recent studies investigated the effect of omega-3s on memory and other cognitive functions in the elderly. While there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids can prevent memory loss or other cognitive declines in the elderly, foods that contain essential nutrients for healthy aging such as omega-3s for example, in general, are good sources for overall health when part of a healthy diet.

DHA is a major component of the retina which means a well balanced diet with adequate essential nutrients for healthy aging can help to preserve eye health in older people. However it is also important to have regular eye tests to check for signs of wear and to treat any problems with the eyes found in good time.

The body’s omega-3’s have not been shown to reduce joint discomfort or reduce inflammation. While the fatty acid may have health benefits for people with joint discomfort or with certain medical conditions and corresponding symptoms, the scientific evidence does not support claims that the fats are in any way effective for people with arthritic symptoms or related discomfort. Treatment of such discomfort and of corresponding inflammation through physical activity and through suitable exercise as well as, where necessary, through medical treatment of the associated symptoms is best.

Best Omega-3 Foods for Healthy Aging and Everyday Nutrition

A variety of omega-3-rich foods are available for healthy eating. The primary source of EPA and DHA are fatty fish, including salmon, tuna, mackerel, and herring. However, these nutrient-rich foods are also typically high in protein and contain many other nutrients necessary for good health. To gain the most health benefits from fish, bake, broil or poach rather than fry. Sardines, anchovies, and other small fish are also rich in EPA and DHA.

Of course, there are also plenty of plant-based alternatives to obtain enough amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in your body. ALA-rich products, for example, are chia seeds and ground flaxseeds. These can be mixed into your oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies or other baked goods. Also walnuts are very healthy to eat and can be added to salads, cereals or even used as a healthy snack. Further, there are many different types of cooking oils that are full of ALA, such as canola oil or soybean oil.

We recognize that the body does make some amounts of EPA & DHA from ALA but for the elderly, who cannot eat fish, there are alternative sources under the direction of their doctor. These sources are DHA-rich algae-based products, which may also contain some amounts of EPA. These foods are ideal for those on a vegetarian or even vegan diet and can serve as an additional source of these important fatty acids in their diet.

The amounts of oil in the product are not always equal to the amounts of EPA and/or DHA in the oil. When purchasing fat supplements, even essential ones, be careful to read the label and be cautious of possible interactions with your prescriptions. Even healthy fats can be problematic for some people. Check with your health care provider before taking any supplements, especially if you are elderly and on many different prescription medications.

Essential fatty acids, even healthy ones, are best taken in small amounts. There are many foods which could cause serious problems when taken with prescription and/or over-the-counter medications. Therefore, supplements should only be taken under the advice of a health care provider, especially if the individual is elderly and on many medications.

Keeping the senior healthy with age can come from choosing healthy foods on a consistent basis. Foods high in omega-3s can be added to the diet of fruits, and vegetables. Also, seniors need to keep active. Finally, healthy aging means treating any illnesses the senior may have with proper treatment. He or she can choose to get ALA, EPA, or DHA based on dietary needs.

Conclusion

Healthy eating is a lifelong journey that supports growth, development, and overall well-being across generations. By choosing a variety of nutritious foods, encouraging children to develop positive eating habits, limiting excessive consumption of highly processed foods, and combining balanced nutrition with regular physical activity, families can build a healthier lifestyle. Consistency matters more than perfection, and small, realistic changes can create lasting benefits. Making healthy food choices a natural part of everyday family life helps establish a strong foundation for lifelong wellness.

There could be various reasons why you might be struggling to gain weight, such as a fast metabolism, inadequate calorie intake, or even underlying health conditions. To start, I recommend keeping a food diary to track your daily intake and ensure you're consuming enough nutrients. Including protein-rich foods like lean meats, nuts, and legumes can help build muscle mass. Additionally, incorporating healthy fats like avocados and olive oil into your diet can boost your calorie intake in a nutritious way. If you continue to face challenges, it's best to consult with a nutritionist for personalized guidance.
