Questions & Answers on "General Surgery" (105)

I feel numbness near the treated area; is this temporary or should I be concerned?

Female | 65

Numbness in the treated area is normal after surgery. This may be because the medicine used in the process has some temporary effect on the nerves. Apart from this, you may have a tingling or pins and needles sensation. Usually, this numbness heals by itself as your body recovers. If the numbness symptom lasts for a long time or increases, you should notify your doctor.

Recently one week back i got tetanus shot due to small cut on my leg..the leg is fine now but i think the tetanus injection didn't get through well,i got bump on my back and its still not healing .There are no signs of any pain but is this a matter to bother is my concern.

Male | 20

I understand you’re worried about the bump at the site of your tetanus shot. It’s normal to have a bump there, and it might take some time to heal. Your immune system is reacting to the vaccine as if it were a foreign substance. If there’s no pain or redness, it’s usually not a cause for concern. Just be patient, and the bump should go away on its own. However, if you notice any unusual symptoms, it's best to seek medical advice.

Household chores after hysterectomy?

Female | 41

To start with light household chores after a hysterectomy and avoid the strenuous activities. For the first weeks, do not lift anything more than 10 pounds to avoid putting stress on this area of surgery. Reintroduce activities such as cooking or light cleaning gradually, but never bend, stretch or lift heavy weight. If you feel uncomfortable or tired, listen to your body and rest. Generally, 6 to 8 weeks after the doctor’s recommendations a gradual return to normal activities is prescribed.

I've been having this recurring pain, swelling and eventual discharge in my tailbone area over the past 5 months now. It comes and goes from time to time but whenever the swelling comes, I apply Vaseline to the area and that helps to drain the swelling. I've come to learn that this might be a pilonodial sinus and I'm very concerned about the potential treatment because I've heard that's painful too. At my stage what is the most likely treatment?

Male | 22

It sounds like you may indeed be experiencing a pilonidal sinus, which can cause discomfort, swelling, and discharge in the tailbone area. This condition often arises from hair follicles becoming infected, leading to the formation of a cyst. Treatment options vary; initial management may involve proper hygiene and draining the area, but surgical intervention might be needed if symptoms persist. While surgery may sound daunting, it often resolves the issue effectively. I encourage you to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination and personalized treatment plan.

The symptoms of ovarian failure following a hysterectomy may include hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Menstrual patterns may change, and if ovaries were taken out, they will stop menstruating. Mood changes may include mood swings and irritability. I was suffering from severe abdominal pain with vomiting. Mera Jab pait ka sonography hua to usme shuru me 3 tumors intestine ke uper dikh Rahe the. Ta. Mujhe doctor ne laproscopy operation karwane ke liye bola . Jisme unhone bataya ki merj naabhi me ek hole karke tumors telescopic method se kaat Kar nikaal denge. Mai is operation ke liye taiyaar the per baad me meri Jo sonography pait ki hui usme 12 tumors mile to meri doctor ne bola ki.mera laproscopy nahi ho aayega kyoki Mera tumors pait me alag laga jagah per fail raha tha. Unhone bola ki Mera pakt beeche se faadna hoga. Mak is operation ke liye taiyaar nahi tha. Mujhe pait ko poora khoolne wale operation ke paper me sign karne bola gaya to Maine mana Kar diya. Chuki mai is operation ke liye taiyaar nahi tha isliye meri surgeon ne mkjhe laproscopy karwa lene ki baat kahi aur unhone ye bhi bola ki mujhe anesthesia low karke denge taakk mai operation ke duraan apne pait ke under computer ke thought dekh paayun. Aur bola ki agar mere pakt kk condition poor nikali to mai operation ke dauraan doctor ko Mera poora pait khoole kk permission De paaun aur agar mai aisa nahi karta hoon to mai apne health keliye jimeedaar rahunga. Mai is operation ke liye taiyaar tha , Jab Mera operation shuru hua to mujhe madam ne anesthesia Kam diya jisse mai dekh paa raha the ki mere pait ke saath kya kiya jaa daha hai. Operation me Jan mujhe monitor me dikaha gaya ki mere pait ke under 17 choote choote tumors hai to madam ne mujhe bola ki tumhara pait poora faadhna hoga.

Male | 37

Abdominal pain with masses on the intestine can happen for the reasons above like a tumor or a growth. In your case, the doctor removed several tumors, which made the operation more complicated. It is important to put your trust in your doctor in such cases to improve your health. It may take time for the recovery to happen, but if you adhere to their post-operative care instructions, you will have the best results.
