Questions & Answers on "General Surgery" (112)
I am 14 years old. I had an appendectomy on 12 December, and my stitches were removed around day 8–9. Since about day 6–7 after surgery, I’ve been feeling intermittent discomfort and heaviness in my right testicle and groin. The pain is not constant; it comes and goes, sometimes dull and sometimes sharp, lasting a few seconds to a couple of minutes, and it improves when I lie down. I don’t have fever, redness, swelling, vomiting, or severe constant pain. The testicle sometimes feels heavier or firmer, especially when standing or moving. I’m able to walk and go to school. I’m worried and anxious about it and want to know if this is normal post-surgery healing or nerve-related pain
Female | 14
After an appendectomy, it's not uncommon to experience some discomfort in the groin or testicle area. This could be due to a few things, like the position you were in during surgery or even some nerves getting a bit irritated. Since you're not having any fever or severe pain, that's a good sign. To help ease your mind, I'd recommend mentioning this to your gastroenterologist during your follow-up visit. In the meantime, try to take it easy and avoid any heavy lifting.

How long do ovaries work after hysterectomy?
Female | 35
If the uterus is removed, as in a hysterectomy with preservation of ovaries, they usually work normally until natural menopause. But this may differ from person to person and the surgical approach. You should talk to your gynecologist and with the surgeon that did your surgery for details about you case. They will inform patients about post-surgery ovarian function recovery.

Male | 37
Laparotomy is a type of surgery where the doctor makes a large incision in your abdomen to see inside and fix any issues. It is done for serious problems such as a blocked intestine, organ health issues, or tumors. During the operation, the doctor opens your abdomen and carefully checks and treats the problem. Following your doctor's advice is the best way to achieve the health results.

I've been having this recurring pain, swelling and eventual discharge in my tailbone area over the past 5 months now. It comes and goes from time to time but whenever the swelling comes, I apply Vaseline to the area and that helps to drain the swelling. I've come to learn that this might be a pilonodial sinus and I'm very concerned about the potential treatment because I've heard that's painful too. At my stage what is the most likely treatment?
Male | 22
It sounds like you may indeed be experiencing a pilonidal sinus, which can cause discomfort, swelling, and discharge in the tailbone area. This condition often arises from hair follicles becoming infected, leading to the formation of a cyst. Treatment options vary; initial management may involve proper hygiene and draining the area, but surgical intervention might be needed if symptoms persist. While surgery may sound daunting, it often resolves the issue effectively. I encourage you to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination and personalized treatment plan.

How to sit after hysterectomy?
Female | 43
After a hysterectomy, sitting is merely the time to facilitate your recovery. Do not proceed with the bend-over technique – use your legs to squat and rise. Pick sturdy chairs with high backs and armrests. Avoid the heavy lifting, forcing pain and take regular breaks. Talk to your doctor for customized recovery plan with particular recommendations as to the proper posture. Pay attention to your body and try focusing on gentle motions along with relaxation.

If a cut was applied at the time of delivery, stitches were not applied due to the patient's condition becoming worse, so is it possible that the wound can be healed by applying stitches again after five years?
Male | 36
It is possible to stitch a cut, even if it happened many years ago. When a cut isn’t stitched at the start, the wound may continue to bleed, could leave a scar, and may take a longer time to heal. If the injury is still causing issues like pain, redness, or discharge even after 5 years, it might need proper treatment to heal completely. It’s best to have a doctor examine the injury and advise on the most effective treatment.

What to expect 4 months after hysterectomy?
Male | 45
After a hysterectomy, the recovery period will significantly improve after four months. Most women find less pain, better movement and back to normal life. Hormonal changes may still occur, and emotions about the transformations occurring in reproductive health might not settle. It is important to make regular follow-up appointments with your Doctor for monitoring of overall well being and addressing any concerns that might be developed during the recovery process.

A hernia is when an organ comes out of a hole in the muscle, making a bump and hurting you. After the surgery, it frequently occurs. The recommendation is to consult your physician without delay. Your doctor might also propose surgery if the hernia is not corrected. Do not lift heavy stuff or strain your belly as it may worsen the hernia during this period.

Sir I am operation hydrocell right side 1yr compited but hydrocell paining and one one time vain pain my doctors tell me no problem sir second time operation hydrocell my.
Male | 37
It's not uncommon for hydroceles to recur after surgery. The pain you're feeling could be due to fluid accumulation or inflammation in the area. Sometimes, a small blood vessel can get irritated, causing that vein pain you mentioned. In fact, a second operation may be necessary to address these issues. I recommend discussing this with your urologist again. In the meantime, wearing supportive underwear and avoiding activities that worsen the discomfort can help.

"My father had surgery about 2 to 3 months ago. However, his wound is now leaking fluid. He has been taking antibiotics, but the issue persists. What should we do? Please advise."
Male | 51
It’s understandable to be concerned about your father's wound. A leaking site may indicate an infection or improper healing. While antibiotics are helpful, persistent issues warrant further evaluation. I recommend contacting his surgeon promptly for an assessment. They may need to examine the area, possibly clean it, or adjust his treatment. Additionally, ensure the wound remains clean and dry, and encourage your father to avoid any activities that could strain the area.
