What is In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?
IVF is a fertility procedure performed when a couple have problems conceiving or managing a pregnancy.
The procedure entails causing the ovaries to release eggs, extracting the eggs, combining the eggs and sperm in a lab, and then inserting the fertilised eggs (known as embryos) into the uterus.
There are other procedures also for treating infertility which is very similar to IVF like-
IUI(Intra-Uterine Insemination)- It is the process in which a sperm is transferred into a woman's womb at the most fertile time of her menstrual cycle.
icsi (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) - is an effective treatment for men with infertility.
Who Needs IVF Treatment?
Suppose you and your partner have been trying to conceive for a year or more without success. In that case, you can consult a fertility specialist to evaluate your situation, determine the best course of action, and assess your options.
If the specialist concludes that your situation is indeed a case of infertility and recommends you undergo IVF treatment, you will likely benefit.
How does it work?
There are few procedures involves in this treatment, let’s know step by step:
- Stimulating the Ovaries
In order to stimulate the ovaries and encourage them to generate many eggs, the doctor will recommend hormone injections. You will often receive these injections between days 2 and 10 of your menstrual cycle, when your ovaries are at their least active.
- Harvesting the Eggs
Egg harvesting is typically referred to as egg retrieval.
- Combining the Sperm with the Eggs
The eggs are now prepared for fertilisation. The remaining semen sample is then divided up, and your partner's sperm is prepared for insemination.
- Incubating the Embryos
Once the eggs are fertilized, then the eggs are incubated for three to five days after. Then, the embryos are prepared for implantation into the uterus.
Success Rate of IVF Treatment
The success rate of IVF is typically around 40%. However, your age and health also play a role. Your IVF doctor will discuss this with you during your appointments.
