Is light bleeding after ipill withdrawal safe from pregnancy?

Patient's Query

Me and my partner had outercourse on 24th may. No intercourse. No penetration. Only dry humping with my boyfriend wearing his tight boxers consistently. Out of fear I took a ipill on 26th may (within 48 hours) and I witnessed a light bleeding like periods on 3rd june till 8th june(6 days). Was it withdrawal bleeding? If so, then am I safe frm pregnancy. I had my last periods on 17th may, so when may I expect my next periods. Dr, I am suffering from anxiety regarding pregnancy chances, so I really seek your professional assurance.

Answered by Dr. Swapna Chekuri

The bleeding you experienced after taking the emergency contraceptive pill on 26th May is likely withdrawal bleeding, which can happen due to the hormonal changes triggered by the pill. This bleeding can mimic a period but is usually lighter and shorter. The fact that you had no actual intercourse and your partner was wearing tight boxers reduces the risk of pregnancy significantly. The bleeding you had also suggests that your body is responding to the emergency contraceptive. Given your last period was on 17th May, your cycle may be a bit irregular this month due to the emergency pill. You can expect your next period within 4-6 weeks from the start of the withdrawal bleeding. If you're concerned, a pregnancy test can offer further reassurance about your current status. If you need more guidance or support, don't hesitate to reach out to a gynecologist

Do I need to take any contraceptive pill if I had unprotected sex on the 2nd day of my period

Female | 21

Having sex without protection on the second day of your period usually means there is a decreased chance of becoming pregnant. During this time, the egg is less likely to be ready for fertilization. However, it is not impossible to get pregnant so if you want to be extra safe, you might want to take emergency contraception within 72 hours just in case.
