Could my cognitive decline be due to inadequate blood supply?
Patient's Query
I am a 22-year-old medical student with a history of OCD. Currently, I suspect an inadequate blood supply to my brain. I experience irritable sensations within my skull that eases when I put candy or chew sugary chocolate in my mouth. Deep breaths also momentarily eased the situation all the time I took them. These sensations, which generally ensue when I put the brain to work, are at times accompanied by tinnitus. Verbal communication is enough brain work to trigger these. Also, these symptoms never disappear after casual meals unless I eat till my stomach stretches. I have had multiple cases of gastroesophageal reflux. These sensations have also manifested post-sleep even though I had eaten till stomach stretch just before sleeping in some of the cases. As pertaining academics and cognitive ability, my cognitive ability decreases with the onset of these sensations. I probably experienced pain in some instances inside my head when trying hard to reason, bring to memory or execute motor functions in a way I could do in the past. My academics has gone downhill - I used to be a top student but I just finished my resit exams Could I get a diagnosis? I currently do not use any medication
Answered by Dr. Gurneet Sawhney
The sensation you're feeling could be related to changes in blood flow or even glucose levels in your brain. It's important to consider conditions like migraines, tension headaches, or even issues with blood sugar regulation. To get a clearer picture, I recommend seeking a thorough evaluation by a neurologist. In the meantime, try to maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and manage stress levels. Don't hesitate to schedule an appointment for a proper assessment and appropriate management.
