What are the possible treatments for breast cancer and their costs in India?

Hello Anjuman,

As you have mentioned we will try to answer your 3 questions.

  1. We are afraid that the details you have mentioned is not enough to determine, at what stage the cancer is now. The stage of cancer depends upon different factors like the:
    • Size of the tumour.
    • How close the tumour is to the lymph nodes and whether it has been effected.
    • Whether the tumour has spread to other organs From the details you have given we can only say that the cancer is stage 2 or greater.
  2. Treatment for breast cancer depends on at what stage the cancer is in. There are different kind of treatments available for breast cancer. These are the different treatments available for different stages of breast cancer:
    • Stage 0 : Mastectomy (Surgical Removal of breast), Lumpectomy with and without radiation(Surgical Removal of Lump), Hormonal therapy
    • Stage 1 : Total Mastectomy, Lumpectomy with radiation, Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes, Chemotherapy(May be recommended), Hormonal Therapy, Targeted Therapy
    • Stage 2 : Total Mastectomy with or without radiation, Lumpectomy with radiation,  Surgical Removal of Lymph nodes, Chemotherapy (Commonly Recommended),  Hormonal Therapy, Targeted Therapy
    • Stage 3 : Total Mastectomy with or without radiation, Chemotherapy followed by Lumpectomy and Radiation, Hormonal Therapy, Targeted Therapy
    • Stage 4 : Surgery followed by radiation, Chemotherapy (Mostly recommended), Hormonal Therapy, Targeted Therapy, Treatment to other parts of the body is also done in case cancer has spread.
  3. The cost of breast cancer depends on the stage and intensity of the cancer. The cost of surgery in a private hospital will be around the range 4000 USD - 6000 USD( 278,000 INR - 417,000INR ). Chemotherapy prices entirely depend on the prices of drugs. For a rough estimation the cost range would be 800 USD - 1500 USD ( 56,000 INR - 105,000 INR ).

We recommend you to visit an oncologist quickly. We hope this information helps you and we wish your mother a speedy recovery. On this page you will find best hospitals to treat her in India - Cancer Hospitals in India.

Hi, my wife has breast cancer, she gone for surgery (breast conservative), then 6 chemos and 32 radiation. Now after one year it came again and we did a biopsy test, she is in the metastatic stage, and ER/PR +(VE) and HER2 (- Ve). Please let me know what treatment should I further do?

Hello, Your wife is having a recurrence of breast cancer. The tests will help in determining the spread and stage of cancer. The suggested treatments are:

  1. Hormone therapy- since the test shows ER/PR+ and HER-ve hormone therapy will be the most considered option.
  2. Targeted therapy.
  3. Bone-building drugs.
  4. Radiation therapy.

Hello sir, my wife told me yesterday that there is a lump around her breast. What further steps should I take to determine if it is cancerous or not? As of now, the lump around her breast is painless. Do I need to visit an oncologist?

As per my understanding your wife is having a painless lump in her breast which is the cause of concern. You consult a surgeon first and get your wife thoroughly examined and evaluated .Only after that will it be clear what her diagnosis is and the required treatment will be advised. Consult Breast Surgery doctors in Mumbai, or in any other city.

Hello, I want to know if breasts are removed in Breast Cancer surgeries, or are there any other methods in which there is no need of removing the whole breasts?

The biology and behavior of breast cancer will be considered for planning the treatment of breast cancer. Treatment options also depends on several factors like the tumor subtype, hormone receptor status, stage of the tumor, patient's age, general health, menopausal status, and preferences. The presence of known mutations in inherited breast cancer genes, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. There are some general steps commonly preferred for treating early-stage and locally advanced breast cancer. Doctors generally recommend surgery to remove the tumor in breast. Though the goal of surgery is to remove all the cancer which is visible but microscopic cells sometimes remain behind. Therefore another surgery may be required. For cancers which are large or are rapidly growing, the clinician suggest systemic treatment with chemotherapy or hormonal therapy before surgery. This is called neo-adjuvant therapy. This helps in shrinking the tumor which is easy to operate; also breast can be preserved in some cases. After surgery it is important to check for recurrence. Then adjuvant therapy is advised. Adjuvant therapies may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or hormonal therapy When surgery to remove the cancer is not possible, it is called inoperable, and then Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, and/or hormonal therapy may be given to shrink the cancer. For recurrent cancer, treatment options depend on how the cancer was first treated and the characteristics of the cancer. What will be the line of treatment in your case will depend on your clinical condition. You can take one more opinion to a clear understanding of your concerns. Consult Cancer Treatment doctors in Mumbai, or any other city you find convenient.

I want to know about Triple-negative breast cancer as our doctor hinted that my aunt has signs of this specific type of breast cancer.

The term triple-negative breast cancer means that the cancer cells do not have estrogen or progesterone receptors and does not make too much of the protein called HER2. ( therefore the cells test "negative" on all 3 tests.)

Triple-negative breast cancer has less treatment options available than other types of invasive breast cancer. The reason being the cancer cells do not have enough estrogen or progesterone receptors or HER2 protein for hormone therapy or targeted drugs to work.

Treatment options are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery mainly. But consulting clinician on time and starting the treatment is important. Regular follow up with doctor with lifestyle modifications and counselling will help. Consult an oncologist.

Hope our answer helps you.

Hello, my father has detected with PT2B adenocarcinoma in Gall bladder cancer. He has undergone radical cholecystectomy. The biopsy report shows microscopic adenocarcinoma in lever with margin of resection lever as negative and lymph node negative. Is chemotherapy needed post surgery?

Hello, Chemotherapy is usually given after the surgery, to reduce the chances of recurring cancer. In some cases, chemo is given before the surgery to shrink the tumour; it is called neoadjuvant therapy. As you have mentioned that your father has undergone radical cholecystectomy, and you want to know if chemo is needed after the surgery. Our recommendations would be to undergo adjuvant chemotherapy. As it is suggested by various studies that, Post-operation chemotherapy is used as palliative care treatment for gallbladder cancer, as it inhibits the growth of any cancer cells remaining in the body after the removal of the tumour. Even though there are various side effects associated with receiving chemotherapy, one can increase their survival chances and diminish any chances of recurrent cancer. Hope this answer helps you. Hello, I have Pancreatic Cancer and it has started spreading to the liver. Which treatment will be able to increase my survival rate?

As per my understanding the patient is suffering from pancreatic cancer and now it has metastasized to liver and you want to know about the treatment. It seems the patient id suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Any cancer stage 4 does not have a good prognosis.

Treatment of cancer to a great extent depends on type of cancer, stage of Cancer, location of the cancer, general condition of patient, associated comorbidities and weighing benefits over risk. So considering these factors doctor will advise the treatment. Consult oncologists. Hope our answer helps you.
