Answered on 10th Feb '24

Spinal infarction or spinal stroke is a disruption of the blood flow to the spinal cord and injury of its tissues. The causes may consist of atherosclerosis, where the arteries are narrowed or blocked because of plaque accumulation, and embolisms when blood clots or other debris travel to spinal arteries leading to reduced blood flow. Other possible causes include vasculitis, arteritis, or disorders of coagulation. .

Causes of stroke are:

  • Spinal stroke is caused when blood flow to spine is blocked.
  • Usually, it is a result of narrowing of blood vessels (arteries) which supply blood to the spinal cord.
  • Narrowing of blood vessels is called atherosclerosis (caused by building up of plaque).
  • Spinal Cord gets damages or even die because it doesn't receive enough nutrients, oxygen and blood.
