how to cover head after hair transplant?

How to cover head after hair transplant?

Answered on 10th Jan '24

After a hair transplantation, wear loose-fitting hats or cap on the head to protect your newly grown area from sun and dust. Do not wear tight hats that can traumatize grafts. Follow your hair transplant surgeon’s guidelines for post-operative care, especially on how and when to shampoo your hair. Limit direct sun exposure and handle with care when washing to ensure that the transplanted hair follicles are not damaged. Do not touch or scratch the area that has been treated. Consult your surgeon regarding how to protect your head after hair transplant surgery for personal advice.

After a hair transplant, it's essential to protect the newly transplanted grafts and minimize the risk of infection. To cover your head, consider using a loose-fitting hat made of a breathable material such as cotton. Avoid tight caps or anything that puts pressure on the grafts.

When covering your head, opt for a hat that allows proper airflow. It shouldn't press against the newly transplanted area. A loose-fitting, clean cap made of soft material is often recommended. Get your head covering approved by your surgeon, and follow their guidelines for the post-transplant period to support optimal healing and results.

To answer your question regarding how to cover head after hair transplant, we would first like to begin with a word of caution, that is to not wear any head gear for at least 10 days till the grafts are completely anchored post hair transplant surgery.

Because any form of manipulation or compression from such garments during this stage, can render your hair follicles damaged and result in visible empty patches on your scalp.

However, after 10 days of wait it would be beneficial for you to cover your head, as the same would protect your hair follicles from sunlight, rain, dirt, or wind.

Mentioned below are some tips that you can follow while covering your head after hair transplant:

  • For the initial 2-3 weeks avoid any tight headwear, and ensure that the headwear doesn't come in contact with scars or newly implanted hair.
    • The hat of your choice should be loose, big, and adjustable, such as bucket hats, or bandanas which offer more control.
    • For bandanas, avoid cotton or any fabric that can stick to your hair and displace them (adjust them loosely).
    • Tighter hats such as cap for hair transplant, beanies, hoods, or baseball caps are prohibited in this stage, so it's advisable to not wear cap after hair transplant.
  • Use both your hands while taking headgear off, to decrease the amount of contact and rubbing.
  • Don't cover your head for more than 5 hours in a day, as the incisions and new hair grafts should have some exposure to fresh air every day.
  • Avoid wearing headweard when there's too much heat.
  • You can't wear motorcycle helmets for the first 6 weeks after hair transplant. In addition to extreme pressure, it may also cause sweating and infections.
  • After 2-3 weeks your hair would have become firmer and more strongly attached to the scalp, so wearing caps would be permissible.
  • Ensure that your headwear remains clean, as any foreign matter may cause an infection.
