My mother underwent rectum cancer surgery last year. Since then she is doing well but I need proper check up and follow up to be done. She cannot take chemotherapy and radiation. Please suggest what should I do?

If you are looking for proper follow up for your mother regarding rectal cancer, then she will have to undergo follow up tests. They are:
- Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA): This test is done every 3-6 months for around 5 years. If there is an increase in CEA level over time then this could be a signal that cancer has come back or recurred.
- Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy is done one year after surgery. If the result is normal, then it is done every 5 years.
- CT Scan: CT scan is done of the chest and abdomen to check for cancer in lymph nodes, lungs and liver. Your mother might also need a CT scan of the pelvis to check for local recurrence.
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy: Flexible sigmoidoscopy is done every 6 months for 2-5 years. As your mother is treated for rectal cancer and she didn't undergo radiation this test is must.
After all these tests the cancer specialist will be able to decide onto which treatment could be advised to your mother. Hope my answer helps you. You can also approach these specialists for second opinions - Oncologist In India.
