I'm asking on behalf of my sister. She is 61 years old. She had breast cancer treatment in 2012, a mastectomy. 2018 she as diagnosed with still disease. She has other pre existing conditions, high blood Pressure, diabetes, thybroids and lupus. She has now been diagnosed with bone cancer. The hospital doctor says they can't treat the cancer because if her other conditions. She wants to fight this. Is there a realistic chance her cancer can be treated to extend her life. I've heard the proton beam is very successful.

Hello Sachin, Treatment for oral cancer (mouth cancer) or any other cancer normally depends on the type, location, and stage of the cancer, age of patient and patient's general condition when diagnosed.

Oral cancer treatment includes:

surgery in early stages,
Radiation therapy,
Chemotherapy.
Treatment for advanced stages will usually involve a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Targeted therapy can be effective in both early and advanced stages of cancer.

In your case, depending of stage of cancer or if it is recurring, the clinician will decide about the line of treatment. Very important is nutrition of patient as eating will be a concern during and after treatment for some time. Hygiene of mouth is also very important and not to be missed. In case of advanced oral cancer, the patient may need reconstructive surgery and some rehabilitation to assist with eating and speaking during recovery. Speech therapist, nutritionist will be needed. I am writing for my father's treatment. He has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in April 2018. He had gone through 6 cycles of of Alimta and carboplatin till October and then two cylces of Alimta only till December 2018. Up to October, he was doing great, had no side effects and his tumor size went down. After that he became very fatigued and also his tumor size increased significantly. In January 2019, Doctor put him on Docetaxel and so far he is doing good with no side effect. But, we would like to continue his treatment in your reputed hospital. I have attached his initial PET scan (April 2018) and recent PET scan (January 2019) along with few other CT scan. I appreciate if you could suggest me the doctor for his treatment and help me getting the appointments. Also, it would be very helpful if you can give me idea about the expenses. Since he will be coming from Bangladesh, it will take time to get visa and arrange rest of the stuff. Currently I am in Canada and planning to join him during his initial treatment at your hospital, preferably in March.

He will have to consult medical oncologist to make a treatment plan. everything will have to be looked into in detail before advising a plan. I suggest you to continue Docetaxel until that time.

Hello, I am 64 years now. I was diagnosed with throat cancer. It's been six months since I finished radiotherapy. But I'm still nauseous all of the time and can't eat or swallow anything. The discomfort in my mouth and throat, as well as the ulcers, are excruciating.

Radiation therapy in throat cancer is a very common treatment modality. It is associated with some side effects which reduce after a certain time period. Nausea, difficulty in swallowing, stomatitis and dryness of mouth are common side effects after Radiation therapy. These side effects can be managed through some saliva substitutes for keeping the mouth moist. You can use some lubricating anaesthesia solutions suggested by oncologist to help in reducing pain because of ulceration. Nutrition is the key to general well being of the body, so if difficulty in swallowing you can opt for temporary feeding tube to fulfill the nutritional needs of the body.
