My mother suffering from Blood cancer leukemia. Can it be cured?
Answered by Pankaj Kamble
Dear Abi, The treatment of leukemia depends upon various factors such as the type of leukemia, person's age and overall state of health, stage of leukemia etc.
- Leukemia survival rate based on the age group:
- 35-44 is 98% approx.,
- 45-54 is 95% approx.,
- 55-64 is 89% approx.,
- 65-74 is 77%approx,
- 75-84 is 70 % approx.
- and 84 is 79% approx.
- Leukemia treatment options based on leukemia stages:
- Remission induction The aim of the induction phase is to destroy the leukemia cells. If there is no sign of leukemia in the blood and bone marrow after treatment it is called a complete remission (CR).
The treatment to expect:
i.) The patient is given steroids for up to a week before the start of Chemotherapy: This begins to get rid of some of the leukemia cells while your doctor gets all your test results and plans for the treatment.
ii.) Chemotherapy into the spine: Leukemia cells can sometimes travel to the brain and spinal cord so as part of the induction treatment one can have chemotherapy and possibly a steroid into the fluid that circulates around the spinal cord and brain. This is called intrathecal chemotherapy. It treats leukemia cells that are in the central nervous system to prevent it to spread to the CNS. - Consolidation therapy The aim of the consolidation therapy is to get rid of leukemia cells that might still be there and to stop it from coming back.
The treatment to expect:
i.) More chemotherapy,
ii.) A donor transplants,
iii.) A transplant with your own blood stem cells - Maintenance therapy The last phase of leukemia treatment is called maintenance therapy. It helps to keep leukemia in remission.
The treatment to expect:
i.) A low dose of Chemotherapy,
ii.) Short courses of steroids for around 2 years,
iii.) Intrathecal Chemotherapy,
iv.) Sometimes one may need blood transfusions or antibiotics if one has an infection.
